Chelsea, IA USA
The second bi-annual NAKP took place in beautiful Chelsea, IA on September 29–October 1, 2006. Mother nature was good to us with clear skies. Steve Waters worked his magic and found us a neat little winery tucked in the hills outside of Chelsea for a base camp. It worked out super, and the accommodations and service were great. The crowd, of some 50 DK enthusiasts, was made to feel right at home.
Friday began with a general Zuchtschau with 16 dogs entered. Frau Margitta Albertsen from Kleinwiehe, Germany and Der Meister Fürher himself, Hermann-Josef Schomakers from Surwold, Germany presided. A fine array of DKs was on hand. Details and ratings are available elsewhere. Following lunch the first hurdle of the NAKP was held—the Zuchtschau. Hugo vom Geestmoor, owned and handled by Todd Waite, garnered V1 rüde while Jade vom Riverwoods, owned and handled by Steve Remspecher, took V1 hündin.
It is unusual to hold a general Zuchtshau in conjunction with the NAKP but recent confusion has placed our own Formwertrichter (conformation judges) in limbo thus mandating the use of German born Formwertrichter for now. Originally, we had invited Frau Albertsen to present the new mandatory JGHV Judges Seminar. In the bottom of the ninth, we were informed that ample notice of this seminar had not been communicated to JGHV, and therefore we could not hold the seminar.
Enough of the bad news, let me move on to the good stuff. Hidden in a small hamlet (Montiour) is a place known well to all who chase the elusive Iowa Chicken. Rube’s is the name and steaks are their game. Well, that’s where we all stuffed ourselves Friday night. As tradition would have it, the lucky folks who walked away with the V1s at the Zuchtschau were made to pay for the drinks. I know they didn’t mind at all. Hermann led the group in many a song and a great time was had by all.
Saturday brought the beads of sweat out on all the handlers. Steve Waters got us some nice water roughly an hour away, and Jerry Kellogg secured the fields near Chelsea. Group I went to the water while Group II proceeded (somewhat sluggishly) to the fields. As luck (and a extremely heavy dew) would have it, no wild birds were to be found so liberated birds were used. By lunchtime the groups switched locations to complete their work.

That night's dinner was held at the winery and an awards presentation followed. Laser designed Lucite awards were presented compliments of President Rob Engelking. A special NAKP label was designed for the wine bottles and given as gifts to participants.
A Sunday brunch was held at the winery and special thanks went out to those who gave of their time and efforts. Margitta and Hermann were thanked again for their contributions to the success of our second NAKP. The NAKP Committee received a well deserved round of applause for the fine job they did. Waidmannsheil to all who ran dogs and prost to all who helped make it happen.
