How to Read an Ahnentafel

The Ahnentafel: German Pedigree, Test Record and Registration

Translation of Terms, Symbols and Abbreviations

An Ahnentafel is the pedigree, test record and registration document of a dog in a German language registry. The following is an example of an Ahnentafel of the German Shorthair Association (Deutsch Kurzhaar Verband) of Germany.

Erst mit dem Eindruck der Taetowier-Nummer wird die Ahnentafel Gueltig.

Die Ahnentafel ist eine Urkunde. Aenderungen und Zusaetze duerfen nur von der Zuchtbuchfuehrung vorgenommen und bestaetigt werden.

Inside: the 5 generation pedigree

Z.-K.-Nr.: or ZB.Nr. – (Breedbook number (tattooed inside the dogs right earflap; note the last two digits indicate breedbook year, e.g. /91 means the dog is registered in the 1991 breedbook.)

Name des Hundes: (name of the dog)

Geschlecht: (sex), Ruede – (male), Huendin – (female)

Farbe und Abzeichen: (color and markings)

Gew. am: (whelp date)

Zuechter: (breeder)

Each generation is color coded, i.e., parents – pink, grandparents – orange, etc.

Each dog's name is preceded by its breedbook number.

Kl.Ausl.Prfg. – (Kleemann Test, awarded the KS title)

D = (Derby Test, with prize number, 1, 2, or 3)

S = (Solms Test, with prize number, 1, 2, or 3)

S (oE) – (Solms without duck search)

VBRE – (subsequent required duck work)

VJP (Verbands-Jugendpruefung) – (Assoc. young hunting dog test, with point total)

HZP (Verbands-Herbstzuchtpruefung) – (Assoc. fall breeding test, with point total)

IKP (International Kurzhaar Pruefung) with prize number, 1 or 2

VBR (Verlorenbringernachweis) – (track/retrieve hare/fox certificate)

BTR (Bringtreuepruefung) – (retrieve of fox test)

SW (Verbandsschweisspruefung) – (blood tracking test, with prize number)

HD0 – (certified not hip dysplastic)

V (Vorzueglich) – (excellent conformation)

SG (Sehr Gut) – (very good conformation)

G – (good conformation)

MS or HN – (toughness certificate)

Number far right – (dog passed the VGP) Verbandsgebrauchshundpruefung, and is registered in the JGHV Stammbuch (registry of versatile pointing dogs)
